For those who knew the Aygo, the change is obvious. By adopting a new platform (TNGA-B, like the one used on the current Yaris), the small Japanese city car has grown by 23 cm to reach 3 m70. Besides, let's jump directly to the conclusion: this is indeed the main criticism I would make of this “ Cross ” (yes, the X is pronounced cross according to Toyota marketing).
23cm is huge, especially for a micro-city car. To put it simply, where the old Aygo was 10cm shorter than the other one in the category (the Twingo), the X is now 10cm longer. This length has advantages in terms of road handling and above all volumes: at the front, the occupants are a little more comfortable than in the Aygo, and they have a much larger trunk (231 l against 168 l… provided you don't take the subwoofer option, which eats up space in the trunk!).
For rear seat occupants? They didn't have a lot of places in the Aygo… and they won't have any more in the X. It's a real shame. In short, the car has grown, but I remain convinced that some of the customers would have preferred the Aygo X to complete the range and the little Aygo to remain in the catalog!
In the same vein, the extra 13 cm in width may also make owners of narrow boxes hesitate!
Exterior
As you will have understood, this Aygo X is longer, wider and higher than its predecessor. Apart from that, his exterior line has evolved enormously! Even if it's a matter of taste, the fact of no longer being a clone of the Stellantis C1/108 pair gives the Aygo X a real facelift, especially since the Toyota designers have let go for once! Between its air of a small SUV(accentuated by the black plastic wheel arches) and the two-tone bodywork (from the Design finish), the youngest is not eccentric but displays a resolutely modern design. Aesthetically, the set is sober and chic! In the battle between our Toyota Twingo and Fiat 500s, our Japanese friends are scoring points at the outside line.
Interior
If you're used to austere Toyota interiors, the interior of the Aygo X will surprise you. Here we have a center console with rounded shapes housing a 7, 8 or even 9-inch touch screen, depending on the trim levels. With Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, the multimedia part is as expected of a modern car.
In the front, we are well settled (unlike the rear seats, which can quickly become uncomfortable, even for children if the adults in the front are over 1m80) and everything would be perfect... if the interior atmosphere is not wasn't black !!! Black dashboard, black upholstery, black roof sky: in such a small city car, a few light colours could have helped to cure the feeling of claustrophobia that a large size can feel.
